One of our recently digitised films from VHS tape is a special report from the Victorian Credit Cooperative (VCCA) from 1988. The VCCA was the peak body for Victorian credit unions (or credit cooperatives as they were often known in Victoria) from 1966 until 1992 when the credit union movement was federalised.

The film (which goes for about 15 minutes) features VCCA General Manager David Dinning explaining the functions and achievements of the VCCA’s Trade Association Division.  These include negotiating exempting credit unions from the Victorian Credit Act of 1984. Dinning also outlines the reasons for a proposed fee increase for member credit unions which was to be an agenda item for the upcoming VCCA AGM.

All in all, it is a fascinating insight into the final years of the state centric credit union movement in Victoria. As well as David Dinning, Australian Federation of Credit Unions Ltd Chair Reg Elliot appears to give the national view and the presenter Edwin Maher introduces VCCA staff members and their roles – Tim Dyce, Manager Public Policy and Liaison – Warwick Smith, Manager Education and Services – Louise Asher, Research Officer and Veronica James, Public Relations Officer.
